Executive Producer and Executive Vice President
A veteran producer, filmmaker, writer and on-air personality, Jon Weinbach is the Executive Producer and Executive Vice-President of Mandalay Sports Media, a sports-content venture founded in 2012 by Peter Guber, Mike Tollin and Creative Artists Agency. Since its founding in 2012, MSM has produced high-profile, critically-acclaimed programming for a wide variety of outlets, including ESPN, CBS, Turner Sports, Vice Media, NFL Network, AOL, and Microsoft Xbox.
Jon has worked at the top levels of sports and entertainment media for nearly 15 years. He recently completed directing and producing “Sole Man,” an ESPN “30for30” documentary about the life and career of sports-marketing guru Sonny Vaccaro. He produced and wrote “The Other Dream Team,” which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, was purchased by Lionsgate, and screened in more than 25 markets across the United States. The film, nominated for “Best Documentary” by the Producers Guild of America, spotlights the journey of the 1992 Lithuanian Olympic men’s basketball team, which fought for recognition from the International Olympic Committee, forged a memorable link with the Grateful Dead and won bronze at the Barcelona Games.
In 2010, Jon produced and wrote “Straight Outta L.A.,” a 2010 ESPN documentary directed by Ice Cube. The film was part of the network’s Peabody Award-winning “30for30” series, and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. It details the Los Angeles Raiders’ connection with the rise of Gangsta Rap and West Coast hip-hop during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
As a journalist, Jon was a long-time staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal, where his articles on sports, Hollywood, and travel consistently appeared on the “Most Popular” and “Most Emailed” lists of WSJ.com. Among the highlights of Jon’s WSJ portfolio: “Wall Street’s $1 Million Fantasy League,” a feature about a secret fantasy football league that included some of the financial world’s wealthiest executives; “Racing’s Royal Bloodline,” a cover story that raised questions about the fragility of racehorses and was published one day before Eight Belles suffered fatal injuries at the 2008 Kentucky Derby; and “In West L.A., a Homeless Man Inspires New Brand,” a Page 1 feature that was picked up by the Times of London, El Pais, The Australian, and was featured on Yahoo’s home page.
In 2009 and 2010, Jon wrote, hosted an interview series and produced video content about sports business and West Coast news for FanHouse, AOL’s sports portal. An expert on the sports business, he has appeared regularly on ESPN, CNBC, Fox News and national radio to comment on and analyze topical issues in the industry. His writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, and New York Times Magazine.
A 1998 graduate of Yale University, Jon lives in L.A. with his wife and two sons.
